How to Enable Success on a Mega-Project, a Case Study of Manhattan’s New Far West Side.
While each of our industry’s projects aim to improve a property, Mega-Projects aim to transform entire neighborhoods. Recently these mega-projects have sprouted up in many neighborhoods throughout NYC. None have been more influential on the city than the development of Manhattan’s New Far West Side. Starting at Penn Station and moving west to the Hudson River, new construction, enabled by the 2005 rezoning, would dwarf the entire downtown areas of most global cities. The development is the largest in NYC since Rockefeller Center. Major projects include (but are by no means limited to): Manhattan West, Hudson Yards, The Moynihan Train Hall, The 7 Line Extension, The Javits Center Expansion, and The Spiral. Our diverse set of speakers have been integral to the development of this area and will offer their insights into how this massive undertaking has been so successful.
Panelists Include:
Henry Caso, Vice President at Brookfield Properties
Michael Stern, Partner and Managing Director of Schlaich Bergermann Partner’s North American operations.
Andrew Werner, Senior Associate Principal at Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF).
Moderator:
Jesse Chrismer, Senior Associate at McLaren Engineering. Mentor Professional Development Chair and ACE GNY Team Leader-Team 17
Seats are limited. Please inform your Team Leader if you are interested in attending and you will receive a calendar invitation as confirmation.
The mid-year Team Leader meeting focused on the ACE GNY Scholarship, preparation for final presentations in May and student retention. Team Leaders had the opportunity to break out into small group discussions to review best practices and share tips on final presentations. Team Leaders also brought a “deputy” to the meeting (someone that will hopefully take your place as a Team Leader in the event you leave).
Mentors from across the 53 ACE GNY teams are invited to our second Mentor meet up. Come mingle, network and meet fellow mentors as we start the new year. Appetizers provided by ACE GNY.

Computers play an increasingly important role in our design efforts. Likely no one in the industry could get through their day without running some analysis on their computer. The programs’ revolutions allow us to model reality closer and closer, but each of our practices are modelling a different reality.
Panelists from Cerami & Associates, Woods Bagot, Langan, Atlier Ten, and Thornton Tomasetti shared insights on different software and technologies in use. There was a focus on the leading edge of software as well as what happens on the perimeter of the software to allow it to connect to other applications from adjacent practices. Panelists also theorized how software applications will progress in the future.
Moderated by Jesse Chrismer, McLaren Engineering.
